Looking Back After The World Ignored The Truth Updated 12/6/2012

Say it's 2050 and though the roads are not as full as now, people make do with cars if they can afford it. Most others stay where they are because there is no way to cheaply go anywhere at all.

Construction has not changed but more and more of sprawl has been abandoned and more large vacated highway spaces have been chopped up into efficiency apartments.

The schools are now moving toward thirtieth worst in the world and higher education is for the wealthy only with a receding  number of scholarships based on merit.

I could go on but let me simply state my theory for the umpteenth time:

We need a totally new theory of settlements based somewhat on Alexander's "Pattern Language" modified to insist that human settlements be car free, that we live in numbers of about 5-10K in a square mile, that all elements of a city be within a single community, and so forth.

We need to generate huge new industries based on creating the modular components of the new construction. We need eco matrix production so that each community can be sustainable in itself, recycling everything, generating its own energy, etc. We need to create local governance that is made up of residents who live and work in these cyber-communities.

I am not saying we cannot adapt what we have now. But we need a model to be built and no one has even drawn it yet.

If this became our plan we would have a vibrant economy and smart solutions and a good future. If we ignore the reality we mark time until we cannot even dream of it.

We will not get the change we need until we are willing to articulate what it is.

The smart wall says it all Smart surfaces (floors, walls, ceilings)

The smart wall says it all. I sit here day by day presaging the future. It is so different that I doubt anyone believes it.

Take the smart wall. Let's say it is made in Detroit and that one such surface costs as much as a home entertainment monolith. You need four of them to make up a space. You know about wallpaper right. It is now understood to be what you put on your monitor screen. On the smart wall, you can change your wallpaper whenever you like. When it is dreary outside you can make your smart wall cheery.

The smart wall may have little connectors for the addition of smart furniture. Also mass produced, maybe for a new cyber community in a non-cyclone area. All you need for furniture are surfaces and smart cushions. And smart walls.

Smart walls do not exist in isolation from the smart matrix and the smart floor and the smart ceiling. None of these  things exist now because the money is all in Stephenson Nano Land Silicon Role Model Territory. At some point Dreiser and Veblen will reincarnate and we will begin to recover the balance between micro and macro. Micro is soft and we need something more substantial.

All of this rises from a dim but accurate perception. The current world is unsustainable. People are making bold efforts to deny this. The new unbuilt Christie Deep Sixed Hudson River Tunnel is an allegory of our time. There will be no more big digs.

Smart walls says it all. I shall be here knitting away as we continue to avoid the writing on the ...

Why is the world economy falling falling falling

World Stocks Fall Amid Economic, Euro Worries | Fox Business:

'via Blog this'

It is falling because the oil sprawl economy to which the whole world aspires is a failing project that can only continue to sputter and fail

It is falling because the lack of confidence that this reality engenders is formidable and going nowhere but up

It is failing because no one has listened to this simple argument and concluded that we could turn things around by predicating everything on the need for car-free cyber communities globally built on pattern language principles. Click labels for emendations.

Our society is a planning disaster.

Our society is a planning disaster. It leeches life from human beings. For this reason, McMansions and their smaller brothers and sisters are a doomed race of dwellings. They genuinely suck, just as the values of the culture that spawned them suck.

Luxury cars that are sold on the noxious premise that they are the last bastion of individualism are likewise doomed in terms of being market-makers
.
We need to identify and celebrate entrepreneurs who understand that our drug-saturated, superstition-drenched culture serves nothing that is human or fine or admirable. We need hard education, smart health and inventive notions of what makes for community.

A viable local economy

Our present society disperses people so that there are less than 100 per square mile. A viable local economy exists when there are 5-10,000 people within walking distance.

A viable commerce cannot be built by a warehouse highway culture that assumes everyone will want to invest everything in home and automobiles.

A Second Recession Could Be Much Worse Than the First - NYTimes.com: "If the economy falls back into recession, as many economists are now warning, the bloodletting could be a lot more painful than the last time around."

We need close quarters car free communities of 10K that are vastly less stratified but at the same time more diverse than what we have in in today's sprawl
We need to enable the re-formation of face-to-face society.
We need to be moving well beyond oil and well beyond conventional concepts of green.
We need to build cyber cities beyond the antiquated concepts of building that now obtain.
We need to replace our auto industry with a spaces creation industry creating modular, lego-like "rooms" in which we live and move and have our being.
We need to attach these to community wide skeletons that handle everything related to recycling, power and water.
We need to think 21st century not 20th
We need to reform work
Work is a privilege not an obligation.
We need to make education student driven and student-chosen
Gird up folks
Put your thinking caps on
We will have to build out of this one idea at a time
Beyond oil
Beyond reliance on the automobile
Beyond moribund education
Beyond unadventurous business and unintelligent governance
Except the seed fall to the ground
It shall not rise again

Economy and jobs will win for neither party

If there is one bipartisan mantra, it is that economy and jobs are the issues that will decide 2012. This is a silly assumption. Neither party is close to dealing with the truth. The truth is that we are at the start of a fifty year struggle to extricate ourselves from the grip of the oil economy and all of its tendrils that stretch everywhere around the globe. Moving beyond the oil economy will mean deciding for or against a continuation of the economic polarization it has helped create. It will mean a process of selecting among different choices for how we will create and structure the cities of the future. It will mean a massive commitment to the reeducation and recalibration of a workforce that has no future in the oil economy and the fields that relate to it which include the creation and maintenance of urban sprawl. None of this comes into the current political discourse which revolves around recovering the very economy that is no longer viable.. The candidate  who is honest about all this may not win but he or she will be right and events will confirm it.
