Blunt truth: We do not seem to act in quite the way the British underclass does. In a sense the Black middle class has been the pawn in this process, creating an illusion of progress when what we were getting was continuing polarization. The best resolution may be acknowledging and inventorying some resources of spirit that have in the past enabled us to begin closing the yawning and brutal chasms that exist.

By minding its own business I mean China's business decisions

The time will come when we do not do as much borrowing from China

As far as I can see China is emulating the United States

This is not good business

We have built up a culture and society that does not work

We have fallen prey to the big oil game

We have invested too much in cars

China is acting as though we are the Major Domo

China has cut back on its eco program

We have no alternative to continue with ours

All told I would suggest that China's business is no less shaky than ours

On Abba's scale of values - the values I infer from a reading of Jesus in the Gospel of Mark - children and their well being rank as high as anything. This translates to the core value of helpfulness. But in the case of this situation, it also taps the core value of tolerance. Tolerance in this case is the strength to rise above a natural inclination to see these terrorists as they appear to be. For there is no greater evil than the callous disregard for life regardless who it comes from. The third core active value is democracy - the honoring of the preciousness and rights of all. If this is an honest account of US action, it is praiseworthy. Humanitarianism is a confession of the failure of these values to take sufficient root in human beings. We need to hold these values high against our inherited Aristotelian list of virtues which masquerade as values.
