And wished the pain that I have had for two weeks now

Imagining Cyber-Communities

Some see a sort of competition between residential areas and countryside when it comes to the "best land". The glorious reality of my cyber-communities is that they could be built on landfill and they would still work. All a cyber community needs is a square mile. Depending on the political state of affairs, it will either be built with serious security in mind or with a degree of openness to the surrounding countryside - or more likely the surrounding sprawl or sprawl residue.

The setting of a cyber community should defer to the availability of lovely land to surround it. It can occupy a declivity, a valley, anything that suggests a degree of protection, since we would wish a cyber-community to withstand most extreme weather without a whimper. That said, we do not build cyber communities next to water or in tornado alleys or anywhere else that extreme weather is predictable. And if and when we build them our suggestive existing model for such a community is a stadium-like structure which may even have a retractable roof or some equivalent both to protect one from deluge and to capture the precious falling drops and process them for human use.

size and heft of a cyber-community. It suggests a matrix
which holds and supports the modular elements which
enclose spaces within the community. It suggests the height,
the walkability within its precincts, And one can readily
infer that 5000-10,000 could live in such spaces and have
plenty of room for other spaces and areas which would
provide any community anywhere with all the institutions
and amenities we associate with urbanity, with the city.

The car and the house eat up the vast bulk of income

There are two approaches to the question of making things more livable for children. The first is to create more and more play areas where traffic is present. Via street closings, reduced speed limits and such. The largely untried approach is to simply rid habitation areas of  automobiles. I think this latter approach will become more and more obvious as the cost of cars and of driving them rises. I assume that we are in for at least a decade of struggle around this issue.coupled with the matter pf maintaining home ownership within our sprawl environment.Both of these commitments - the car and the house - eat up the vast bulk of income and feed the most venal part of the economic establishment - the construction, automobile and oil industries. We could reduce our expenses considerably - or channel our money to more productive rewards - by conceiving of mile square areas which would be car free. These built on democratic pattern  language principles. Children would walk to school. Shopping could be done in kiosks connected to the world of goods and services. Delivery could be streamlined and improved to the point that society would essentially work door to door.

If we do not voluntarily initiate car-free models of social development, we will be forced to create them over the century as the costs of alternatives ascend. The result will be less appealing than if we think ahead and model them ASAP.

The same old same old is not a long term option. It will hold for a minimum of two generations. After that we  will be lost in a world where the one percent lives in gated isolation  It is urgent that Occupy folk and others begin to add car-free to their lexicon and ponder what sort of living this portends.

I think the text above is self-explanatory. It is hard to lead a movement within a marketing-context. Then again it is hard to lead one in any context these days. Which is why Occupy is leaderless. And why the Web manages to get things done without leaders.

10k persons can live within a square mile on no more than four levels, car-free, zoned for all elements needed to create a community of residence, work, commerce, health and recreation.

The NY Metro Area is a shade under 7,000 square miles and has a population a shade under 20,000,000.

A million persons requires but 100 square miles. 20 million requires 2000 square miles.

In the most populous area in the United States, my cyber-community configuration would occupy no more than 25 percent of the available land.

You could therefore double the population of the area and use less than half the available land.

And each cyber-community would have its own character and design. They would be linked by public transportation. Cyber-communities would have all aspects of a city and therefore could be anywhere. I have no doubt that they will be in time.

Sprawl is based on the flight from the city.

Architects and designers conspired with developers to serve the base motive to stratify and segregate the society.

Occupy should insist on the right of people to have a habitat that includes all we presently zone out.

Correct this noxious flight from justice and common sense.. Create  new car-free cyber-communities, smart, diverse, vibrant. Reverse the nightmare we have been living in since the 1960s.

Correct that. Until suburbs turned into sprawl. We are talking a century-long process.

Smartest thing Occupy could do would be to build new cyber-communities for up to 10K persons within mile-from-end-to-end areas. It can be done. These would be zoned for everything - education, entertainment, residence, work, commerce, etc. They would be car-free. Create the integral designs and start building and it will speak louder than any words that we could write. It would truly revolutionize society.

Here's a timely warning no one took seriously

Bill Clinton's Warning to Democrats at CGI - The Daily Beast: "Disgruntled Obama supporters planning to sit out the midterms are making "a horrible mistake," he said. "Like everything else you do when you're mad, there's an 80 percent change you're making a mistake. You'll get the exact result you don't want.""

Bill Clinton's advice above was right on. He also included the following in his warning.

1. The media have been absolutely criminal in their failure to fact check the GOP's false facts and figures as they seek to nail the Democrats unfairly and dishonestly.

2. The evil plan of the GOP if they regain control of Congress is to shut down the government entirely. They can do it by occupying time with frivolous investigations.

Not only Democrats but Independents and sensible Republicans should be very worried.

Occupy Oakland protesters split over violence: "The conflict is turning into a wrestling match for the soul of the Occupy movement in the Bay Area. And it's become so pronounced that many who started out calling themselves Occupiers now refer to themselves as "99 percenters" instead.

The media thirst for a reason to discredit Occupy. Scholars join cynics in dissing notions of world peace. The sign is stasis, the crushing of hope. Countering this is the growing fear that if we do not move forward in a progressive way, we will be condemned to more of the sort of fears that gripped us viscerally in 2008. Putting these two things together, we need a Web groundswell of argumentation for the utility and necessity of non-violence as the emblem of this movement going forward. Argumentation such as: nonviolence is not wimpish. Nonviolence is a process by which long-standing prejudice is effectively challenged and broken. Nonviolence is the moral evolution of this century - the century of global democratic revolution.

I shall insist to my dying day that the resolution of world problems hinges on reversing this dominance. We have a movement to get that done now but it has not penetrated the larger and determinative Occupy movement. It must and should. The illustration below surmises human settlements in which few if any vehicles exist. There is no reason that the separation and winnowing cannot occur save human slobhood which we should joyfully acknowledge, not seek to suppress. Acknowledging it, we can apply our minds to reckoning with it. This is what F. L. Wright failed to do when he thought every suburban family would gladly plant a veggie garden. We have grown up some. As in the present recycling of plastic and the elimination of cars from dominance of global design and economy. It is, mind you, a failing and doomed economy for many obvious reasons.

There is so much blame for the reality that is rarely even referenced that all this brouhaha is lost on people who understand that we live in a minority-abused society top to bottom. Anyone who thinks the Great Society was the cap of progress is whistling in the wind. The fact is that both parties have created the context of today's rampant and growing poverty. Both need to be replaced by persons who can see to the truth and not be sucked in by what the media says in its binary blindness. I believe most in Occupy understand this.

Interesting. It means she is a bystander. If Newt should win it would up her stock and perhaps sink Romney ultimately. But Occupy has eclipsed the Tea Party and Newt's arguments seem unable to thwart the unseemly motive to beat Obama at any price. With a one-percenter who cannot talk without memorizing what he is told to say? I hear someone in the West Wing saying bring it on.

I doubt this would have attracted notice without what apparently was a harmless event. Nonetheless nonviolence involves the idea of being the one exposed to retaliation, not anything to distract from that linchpin of nonviolence. Of course we will never know if this was a yippie-type thing, in which case I would retract the stern sentence preceding.
