Sprawl is based on the flight from the city.

Architects and designers conspired with developers to serve the base motive to stratify and segregate the society.

Occupy should insist on the right of people to have a habitat that includes all we presently zone out.

Correct this noxious flight from justice and common sense.. Create  new car-free cyber-communities, smart, diverse, vibrant. Reverse the nightmare we have been living in since the 1960s.

Correct that. Until suburbs turned into sprawl. We are talking a century-long process.

The American Dream Is Not More Sprawl

We can't afford: Relying on more oil, the cost of wars, having a car or cars to get where we need to go, the costs of education in a tenure-overladen system, the house that is so set apart that you need a car or cars just to function.

We need: A serious look at alternatives to societies that rely on cars, on eating up land for housing farther and farther from places of work and are finally wed to the vagaries of oil politics.

The True Pain at The Pump

Pain at the pump is no mystery - Chicago Breaking News: "The price of gas 'makes me sick,' said Geraldine Stiles, 33, of Chicago's Portage Park neighborhood."

Pain at the pump is addiction to sprawl

Pain at the pump is choosing commuting as a lifestyle

Pain at the pump is not being willing to use public transportation

Pain at the pump is everything we do to help oil companies with huge tax breaks

Pain at the pump- is preferring crowded expressways to creating car-free communities zoned for everything that makes life worthwhile

Pain at the pump is our pain for not dealing with these realities

Zoning is the tail that wags the dog

Why does U.S. zoning need a new look? It's not zoning per se but the zoning we have that's the problem, the zoning that separates shops from our dwellings, the zoning that encourages metrosprawl, the zoning that allows multiple stories until everything is vertical, the zoning that leaves our society divided between rich and poor.

What is a cyber-community

What is a cyber-community

A not-yet thing

A social network on the ground

Real

The community part is the following:

We live in it

We are face to face in it

It contains many levels of sharing

A household

A workplace

Recreational spots

Entertainment

Learning nodes (aka education)

It uses the ideas implicit in cyber

to create the actual physical reality around us

A cyber-community is a rejection of sprawl and the dominance of the car

It is walkable from end to end and side to side and level to level

It has only three or four levels

Instead of being apartments and houses it is modular spaces

Spaces that can be added to and subtracted from

Public and private

All in an eco-grid that makes the entire community sustainable

Why Yesterday's Construction Technology Must Go

It is too expensive

It is not mass-produced at a proper scale

It is not smart

It cannot be easily integrated into a grid that could supply energy and remove waste for a whole community

It is in the hands of developers whose aim is to extract the last dollar with little regard for human needs or human participation in planning

The idea of making each distinct structure a stand-alone eco-plant multiplies costs and hurts efficiency

Concentration on renewing old structures delays the day when new initiatives can create genuinely 21st Century communities where all elements are integrated, where all surfaces are smart, and where life in all respects is within walking distance 

Yesterday's construction was for sprawl, highways and endless separated housing segregated so you have to drive everywhere

Tomorrow's construction will be integral, beyond green and reflect a new economy that integrates grass roots and global

The initial shock of the BP oil spill is now a memory but these pictures bring it starkly into focus. These pictures should raise questions for now and the future.

But the world is still hell bent on oil and cars and superhighways and sprawl and all of the things that these pictures tell us are long term lethal, whether we think of the children killed by vehicles, the wars fought for oil dominance or the current rush in China to become another automotive state with sixty mile traffic jams.

We need experiments to get us out of the mess we are in.

We need a new economy based on the remaking of our society using a holistic model where we can walk to everything and everything we need for living is within a walk.

Such experiments should be the province of both governments and entrepreneurs and should let a thousand flowers of imagining bloom. Until we make the leap we need.

The reason is that institutions have lost their foundation. Institutions are, at the root, meant to foster and embody values of tolerance, helpfulness. democracy and non-idolatry. Efforts to define marriage by these values run up against the actual values that surround and inhabit the institution - ownership and possession. Proof that children are better off with a two parents does not consider that the reason for this may be the collapse of extended communities exacerbated by our car-sprawl culture and economy. We are at the start of something very big and I think it relates to the transition from institutional religion to universal spirituality based on the ontological values I have named. I am married now but I feel my marriage manifests tolerance, helpfulness, democracy and non-idolatry. We need institutions but the ones we need do not exist quite yet. The current trend leads toward them.

Suppose we want something beyond cars and commuting

Beyond detached houses built for size

Suppose we want walkable communities with enough population to enable viable local businesses

A way to work and be educated at or near home

Zoning that integrates everything in a sane and rational way

The miracle of cyberspace means we can choose where and how we live and move and have our being

Once the mind is liberated from resignation to our current sprawl culture

we can see a cyber-community as a giant step beyond what we now have

We could mass produce lego like components for the construction of modular units of space

These could supply the world

We could create a giant matrix that would serve 5-10K

Accommodating myriad forms built from these components
Enabling technological macro elements that no individual could afford
For recycling,
Energy generation
Enjoyable face to face living
A reformed education system
The integration of cyber-capacity with every element of socio-cultural existence

Cyber-communities would be safe from most weather emergencies

They would enable new economies

New jobs

New mobility

I see Amazon as a crucial link in creating an entirely rescaled economy.

The new economy would have mass-produced kiosks that would be placed in cyber-communities of five-to ten-thousand persons. Each of these would be a sort of franchise that would benefit those who worked there. Each would tie into a chance to do online comparison shopping on steroids.

You would place an order and it would be delivered.

In this scenario Amazon would not be a monopolist but a fulfillment operation with the resources and long-term vision to spawn an entirely new shopping infrastructure that would be part of the car-free communities that will replace the sprawl culture of today.
