This is total malarkey
Are Your Humanitarian Heartstrings Being Tugged in the Name of Empire? | World | AlterNet: "The media effect of filling a newspaper with human rights atrocities from the developing world functions to distract the audience from strategic and mineral designs the US and its allies have going in those countries, and to dilute the news coverage when their true aims come to light." The media does nothing of the kind. We are blind both to human rights abuses and to the imperial project. The notion that we emphasize human rights at the expense of the worse crimes against the planet is silly. We do ignore the plundering but that is a massive and culpable defect that stands alone. The real connection between philanthropy and genocide lies in the failure of philanthropic groups themselves to flag the underlying issues in exchange for their futile effort to close the death gap.
