A kind of hierarchical rhetoric

...social order we note
always involves people who communicate
as superiors, inferiors and equals,
and pass from one position to another.
Such communication is always a form of address,
a kind of hierarchical rhetoric,
in which ... we justify our rank to ourselves and to others
by enactingin various kinds of community dramas
the value to some great transcendent principle of social order
of the roles we play.
