The concerted adulation of the matter of fact has proceeded apace since Veblen's time. And design and most everything else has followed in virtual lock step. Veblen celebrated independent thought and the instinct to workmanship and would doubtless regurgitate at such remnant of both as now exist. The values that can counter the idolization of the matter of fact are four in number - non-idolatry to pave the way for independence of mind, helpfulness to consider how enabling is our uniformity in almost all things, democracy to suggest everyone have an equal voice in all matters and tolerance to ward off the lethal effects of transgressing these values.
