He even smiled as his captors threw him roughly down into the rat-infested depths

The Complete History of Adam Panflick: Book One:

"His albergo was a few steps away but he reckoned it would provide scant protection if, as he had been warned, the pirates’ aim was to snatch him and add him to the roll of captives regularly sold into slavery on the Barbary Coast. So Orlando simply sat where he was and waited. He even smiled as his captors threw him roughly down into the rat-infested depths of their nauseating craft."

New Tao Posts: The Tao replies in song to all who hear

New Tao Posts: The Tao replies in song to all who hear:

This is an essential post in this series because it contains the only prayer that Jesus taught in words that can be easily sung by anyone. I take it that Jesus saw this prayer as all that was needed and from the prayer itself that it is to be said daily in not even more often. And that its use is probably worth more than most other religious observances put together.

The Tao replies in song to all who hear

The Tao replies in song to all who hear
These words rise silently distinct and clear
Abba whose home in heaven is
Hallowed and holy is your name
Let your realm come your will be done
Till earth and heaven are the same
Give us this day our daily bread
Forgive the wrongs that we have done
As we forgive those who do wrong
Lead us not into temptation
Deliver us from evil Lord
And safely guide us to your shore
Yours is the power to heal and mend
Yours is the glory evermore
Say but this prayer it contains all
The Tao responds to every call

Yes though I would substitute spirituality for religion

The Theology of Science and the Internet - Forbes: "Science and religion aren’t natural enemies. They’re both attempts by people to explore, understand and know the universe around us. I think it’s sad that in the past few decades that our culture has come to see them at odds with each other, instead of seeing them both as sources of inspiration for people to fulfill their highest potential."

Question is not whether feds will aid Perry Bush 3 but whether he will say thank you

Today, Governor Perry took an aerial tour of wildfire damage in the Steiner Ranch community in Travis County west of Austin, and met with emergency management and local officials who have been battling fires there"

Some common sense from Daily Kos

Daily Kos :: State of the Nation: "In the current political environment, Republicans are not going to agree to do anything that doesn't help them win the White House in 2012. Given that state of affairs, the pragmatic thing to do is to recognize the situation for what it is. And that means President Obama should build his jobs proposal around what he thinks are the very best ideas to actually grow the economy—not what his advisers think are the most "pragmatic" ones."

I refuse to post videos with Exxon-Mobil natural gas ads

I am sick of these Exxon-Mobil ads because I know they do not remotely tell the whole story, including whether the fracking creates resources that will be profitable, including the environmental damage and including whether anyone has seen that there is a massively easier solution that everyone can get involved in. Call it car withdrawal. Oil withdrawal. Cold turkey creation of cyber-communities that are car free. Where is our ingenuity? Surely not in the supercilious presentations of Exxon-Mobil and their feel-good fracking ads.

Why cyber-communities are the salvation of democracy

The car metrosprawl world is antithetical to face to face democracy
The car metrosprawl world is antithetical to a vibrant economy
A pedestrian walkable car free closely knit community
With things at scale with a population of around 10,000
And no more than four levels reached by
Stairless walkways
Which safe vehicles can also ply at times
Such a community enables democracy to flourish
Such a community integrates work and play and health and education with residence
Instead of everyone her own car everyone her own room
Mass produced and customized like cars are today
The town hall would be no more than a five minute walk from anywhere

Jobs are not obsolete - they will be different

Are jobs obsolete? - CNN.com: "New technologies are wreaking havoc on employment figures -- from EZpasses ousting toll collectors to Google-controlled self-driving automobiles rendering taxicab drivers obsolete. Every new computer program is basically doing some task that a person used to do. But the computer usually does it faster, more accurately, for less money, and without any health insurance costs."

My notion of a future job is a zillion kiosks in a zillion cyber-communities (car free gatherings of 10K persons more or less) with each kiosk operating 24/7 requiring four full time managers and dealing with one explicit thing using large screens and being a gathering place for people interested in whatever that thing is whether learning to read or finding one's blood pressure or studying history or getting a job.

C. S. Peirce on positivism and metaphysics

Peirce Edition Project | Volumes:

"Positivists are in the habit of considering positivism and metaphysics as opposed species of philosophy. Now to maintain that the conclusions of metaphysics are as yet very certain would be enthusiastic enough in view of the differences of opinion among metaphysicians. These differences have been growing less and less from one century to another, owing to a gradual clearing up of conceptions. But the whole effective result of metaphysical research hitherto may be described in saying that certain indistinct conceptions have been made distinct. Every great branch of science has once been in the state in which metaphysics is now, that is when its fundamental conceptions were vague and consequently its doctrines utterly unsettled; and there is no reason whatever to despair of metaphysics eventually becoming a real science like the rest; but at present that is not the case."

To those who have shall more be given

Left behind in America: Who's to blame for the wealth divide? - Political Hotsheet - CBS News: "That wasn't even close: In reality, the top 20 percent controlled about 84 percent of the wealth, while the bottom quintile controlled just 0.1 percent. The combined net worth of the bottom 40 percent, in fact, accounted for just 0.3 percent of the nation's wealth. (See chart below, where that bottom 40 percent doesn't even show up.) "

When Jesus said the words in the heading it was in the nature of his similar statement that there will be wars and rumors of war. Both statements do not represent either the values he enunciates or the goals that he seeks. The values tend toward universal helpfulness and full equality and the goal is to give one's life so that Abba will be vindicated. Given Abba's bum rap in much of the Bible that is a major project. It requires what Nietzsche called a revaluation of values and what Deridda called the unprecedented.

Perry Bush 3 excels in creating poverty

How Rick Perry Has Been on the Public Dole His Whole Life | Tea Party and the Right | AlterNet: "Here's a particularly revealing stat that the Perry pixies don't want us to see: On his watch as governor, Texas added more minimum wage jobs than all the other 49 states combined. Why we should build cyber-cities

Twitter & Bing Show Their Love for Each Other..via Twitter:

Without cyber-cities - aka creating car free communities of 10K or more clustered along existing rights of way - there will be no place where location means a hill of beans save sprawl areas and big cities. And even then the car will defeat serious schmoozing. Face it individual dwellings cost too much and even more when they break down or burn to the ground or are flooded out. Cyber-cities have individual spaces mass produced by the folk who used to make cars attached to a matrix that deals all the utility stuff. These spaces contain living, working, learning, recreating and so forth. Integral. Instead of spending money we don't have on sprawl high rise stuff, we spend it on renewable and changeable and portable cyber cities with enough going on to make location interesting.

Charity is a two edged thing. It can ruin and create a sort of genocidal system with the victims being all philanthropy failed to reach. And it can transform both givers and receivers. But in the value system that is said to trump the way we do things, anonymity reigns.

Was Jesus an intellectual?

Abba's Way - Stephen C. Rose : IUniverse:

Absolutely. Anyone who reflects on reality and amends what needs amending is an intellectual. Anyone who thinks with any degree of faith in mental processes is an intellectual. Dostoevsky said all Russians are philosophers. More or less the same thing. With a twinge of appropriate irony.

There are intellectuals and intellectuals

Boston Review — Noam Chomsky: The Responsibility of Intellectuals, Redux: "Not everyone toed the line so obediently, of course. Notable figures such as Bertrand Russell, Eugene Debs, Rosa Luxemburg, and Karl Liebknecht were, like Zola, sentenced to prison. Debs was punished with particular severity—a ten-year prison term for raising questions about President Wilson’s “war for democracy and human rights.” Wilson refused him amnesty after the war ended, though Harding finally relented. Some, such as Thorstein Veblen, were chastised but treated less harshly; Veblen was fired from his position in the Food Administration after preparing a report showing that the shortage of farm labor could be overcome by ending Wilson’s brutal persecution of labor, specifically the International Workers of the World. Randolph Bourne was dropped by the progressive journals after criticizing the “league of benevolently imperialistic nations” and their exalted endeavors."
