Supreme Court ethics? They have conflicts of interest?

Democrats Seek to Impose Tougher Supreme Court Ethics - NYTimes.com: "House Democrats, seeking to capitalize on recent questions about the political leanings of several Supreme Court justices, are pushing for toughened ethics standards that would hold the justices on the high court to the same judicial requirements as federal judges."
Wonder who they have in mind?

There are inherent impulses in us pointing to universal values

Pragmatism and Abba's Way - Associated Content from Yahoo! - associatedcontent.com: "Abba's way does not merely believe that things must work. Abba's way believes there are inherent impulses within each human being pointing to universal values that, when made central, work to move history forward in ways that can indeed be measured and deemed efficacious and true."

You won't find much direction for Yahoo here

4 chiefs, 4 years: Yahoo's leadership problem | ZDNet:

The post above marches in place. Maybe Yahoo will consider my idea. Corner the market on decent free lance and amateur writers. They already have a start in that direction. Simply pay them better than anyone else which will be a snap because Arianna over at AOL is famous for paying people nada. By cornering writers and turning them into a well-schooled and well-paid force, Yahoo could create an identity and rule the local market.

Is this clear enough Mr. President? (Video and Text)

"We Can Change History"—Video from the Fight to Stop a Tar Sands Pipeline: "According to tarsandsaction.org 1,252 arrests were made and nine Nobel Peace Laureates, including the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu, signed a letter urging President Obama to stand by his promises to find clean energy alternatives and create a healthier environment."
This is an issue with only one side. The third way lies beyond.

Getting the sin thing straight

When Jesus talks about sinners he does not mean everyoneHe means people whose consciences are troubled because they have stolenOr lied or committed adultery or otherwise violated the commandmentsHe is ironical about the non-sinnersBut there are numerous people who really have not transgressed To these Jesus simply suggests they follow Abba's wayJesus loves sinners precisely because they realize they have problemsSince the universal healer is forgiveness he makes sureThey use the Lord's Prayer and repent daily Charles Pierce and me are soul buddies because we have no questionAbout our sinner statusAnd for that reason both of us have approached truth As little childrenAnd received untold rewards

Heello in action

Noah Everett (@noah) on Heello:
Lots of synonyms here. My guess is that there is room for about two of these and we know who they are. With LinkedIn a lucky also ran. The next big thing might be something that understands what you might actually be interested in reading and assembles it for you without making you miserable in the bargain. Oh, and then there's Google + which, I must assume, has some tricks up its sleeve.

The US water wars, I fear, are only in their infancy

Water pipeline between Wyoming and Colorado a high cost venture | The Washington Independent: "It’s not exactly Perrier-pricey, but pretty damn close, according to opponents of the massive proposed Flaming Gorge pipeline project that would pump water out of the Green River in southwest Wyoming and suck it back over the Continental Divide to Colorado’s Front Range."

Although, you never know, extreme weather could work for as well as against us.

One Minute Christian: One Minute Christian Introduction

One Minute Christian: One Minute Christian Introduction:

"The One Minute Christian is a short book which explains exactly what is involved in moving from a dying local church structure to a vibrant and intentional local community that embodies both the simplicity and the transforming power of the way of living that Jesus preached and embodied."

Just reading Veblen can infuse one with a sense of wellbeing

The Theory of the Leisure Class: III: "In order to gain and to hold the esteem of men it is not sufficient merely to possess wealth or power. The wealth or power must be put in evidence, for esteem is awarded only on evidence. And not only does the evidence of wealth serve to impress one's importance on others and to keep their sense of his importance alive and alert, but it is of scarcely less use in building up and preserving one's self-complacency. In all but the lowest stages of culture the normally constituted man is comforted and upheld in his self-respect by "decent surroundings" and by exemption from "menial offices". Enforced departure from his habitual standard of decency, either in the paraphernalia of life or in the kind and amount of his everyday activity, is felt to be a slight upon his human dignity, even apart from all conscious consideration of the approval or disapproval of his fellows."

TPM gives the debate to Mitt

Talking Points Memo | Breaking News and Analysis: "In my mind, whatever the polls say tomorrow, Mitt Romney came out of tonight with a strong argument that Rick Perry can't win a general election. Whether that shows up today or tomorrow or whenever, that's a thing of great value to someone in Romney's position. So again, I score the evening a strategic victory for Romney."

And I agree and must say that I was pleasantly surprised by the general tone save for Ron Paul's rather weak rants.

Embedded in the smarmy world of modeling

Ashley Mears' "Pricing Beauty": What a sociologist learned by moonlighting as a fashion model. - By Libby Copeland - Slate Magazine: "Ashley Mears embedded as a model. Then an NYU grad student in sociology, Mears had an idea what she was in for. She'd modeled in college, and knew that she still met the narrow physical requirements for the job. But this time around, she took notes..."

Some promising chemistry

New material shows promise for trapping pollutants: "Chemists at the University of California, Santa Cruz, have now developed a new type of material that can soak up negatively-charged pollutants from water. The new material, which they call SLUG-26, could be used to treat polluted water through an ion exchange process similar to water softening. In a water softener, sodium ions weakly attached to a negatively-charged resin are exchanged for the hard-water minerals, which are held more tightly by the resin. "

Of course the GOP cheered. They like a binary world.

GOP debate audience cheers Perry’s execution record | Raw Replay: "“No, sir, I’ve never struggled with that at all,” Perry flatly stated. “In the state of Texas, if you come into our state and you kill one of our children, you kill a police officer, you’re involved with another crime and you kill one of our citizens, you will face the ultimate justice in the state of Texas, and that is you will be executed.”"

Someone will test the testers some day

PsycPORT Article: "Bullying was defined as "the use of one's strength or popularity to injure, threaten or embarrass another person on purpose." It did not include incidents when "two students of about the same strength argue or fight."Researchers said they hoped to show educators and others that success in testing goes beyond academic instruction and preparation. "Our study suggests that a bullying climate may play an important role in test performance," they wrote."

Find out who's paying your doctor for promotions

Dollars for Docs - ProPublica: "Drug companies have long kept secret details of the payments they make to doctors and other health professionals for promoting their drugs. But 12 companies have begun publicizing the information, some because of legal settlements. ProPublica pulled their disclosures into a database so patients can search for their doctor. Accepting payments isn’t necessarily wrong, but it can raise ethical issues. "

"Christianity today will be confined to praying for and doing right by our fellow man." - Bonhoeffer

The Grass Roots Church: The Grass Roots Church Part One:
"Atonement, regeneration, the Holy Ghost, the love of our enemies, the cross and resurrection, life in Christ and Christian discipleship-all these things have become so problematic and so remote that we hardly dare anymore to speak of them…. So our traditional language must perforce become powerless and remain silent, and our Christianity today will be confined to praying for and doing right by our fellow man. Christian thinking, speaking, and organization must be reborn out of this praying and this action." - Dietrich Bonhoeffer
