President Should Be Clear As A Bell on Torture

Letter to President Obama urging statement against torture | Human Rights First: "In light of the debate following the death of Osama bin Laden, we urge you to make an unequivocal statement that torture is illegal, immoral, and un-American. The use of torture undermines our national security and intelligence gathering efforts. The United States must lead by our core principles and condemn torture"

The President would lose nothing by finding a way to make this statement. He has in the past made major human rights statements in the context of speeches and other utterances and they are highly significant. One could have understood his attitude to democratic revolution by listening to what he actually said.

To make a statement like the above regarding torture would be useful at a time when there is a good deal of undue elation bearing the McCain bomb Iran stamp running about.
