How North Carolina Mucked Everything Up

Becky Garrison: On May 8, 2012, with 2,136,277 votes cast, 61% of voters in North Carolina voted in favor of an amendment that makes “marriage between one man and one woman… the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this state.” While North Carolina already has a law prohibiting same-sex marriage, Republicans deemed this vote necessary to ensure that the law could not be struck down by “activist” judges.

With this amendment’s passage, North Carolina becomes the 31st state to pass an amendment upholding “traditional marriage.” The Pew Center for the States reports that “a similar ban is on the ballot later this year in Minnesota. In four other states, supporters of gay marriage are on the offensive.

In Maryland and Washington, voters may be asked to decide whether to allow new laws permitting same-sex marriage to take effect, although neither measure has not qualified for the ballot yet. And in Maine, a citizen initiative later this year would authorize gay marriage. Proponents are trying to get a similar proposal on the ballot in Ohio.” An infographic map charting the state of gay marriage in the United States can be found on their website.

The New York Times outlined the concern, raised by a group of family law professors from across the state, that this vague language could also apply to the more than 150,000 straight couples in the state who live together but are unmarried. The amendment could also invalidate domestic-violence protections, undercut child custody arrangements and jeopardize hospital visiting rights.”

Mildred Purse offers Expletive Therapy to Mitt Romney

Among Mildred Purse's accomplishments is an uncanny ability to help the mentally deprived. Recognizing that Mitt Romney does possess mental abilities, she offers him a formula for attaining peace of mind as he tries to survive without suffering a massive implosion.

Here is what you do. Governor. When you encounter a group that is jobless hit them with the marriage is a man and a woman thing. Then instead of talking on, pause and stare at them with a quizzical expression on your face. Suggesting sympathy. Stay cool. When the media ask you what was up in there, you say, Listen, I never pull any punches. I am the same yesterday today and tomorrow. Then stare at them. And before they can come back at you, drop few choice expletives they will have to bleep. This will establish you immediately as the front runner.  You will feel a catharsis and experience a month of self-satisfied chuckles.

Why Charles Sanders Peirce Is a Posthumous Threat

Salient post from our Peirce List

Between 1865 and 1870, C.S. Peirce had already begun to set out the rudiments of an information-theoretic semantics for inquiry, communication, and thought in general, along with a logic of relatives that is powerful enough to handle polyadic relations, in particular, the triadic relations that one requires in the theory of signs and throughout mathematics.
This is the palette of ideas that Peirce found himself forced to develop to paint a picture of inquiry that could even hope to be “true to life”.Many of these ideas we would not see again until the late 20th century.
When it comes to the reception of this picture, this style, by judges from another school, I think we have to sort the aesthetic or affective impacts from the cognitive or intellectual factors. Personally, I don't suppose I will ever have the investigative resources or skills to find out what really happened in the case of Peirce, but common sense tells me that handing out his relics like favors at a scalping party must betoken some form of active, if unconscious hostility.
And if I were to speculate on the springs and catches of that hostility, I would guess that there is probably a link between fearing the message and counting coup on the messenger.
- Jon Awbry
Nietzsche and Peirce in my sense of things are the key influences on what is actually happening, though both are barely acknowledged in the contexts in which their influence may turn out to be strongest. Were I to suggest that it is in the metaphysical realm, I would be offering a clue. Not to deny it in other realms but to suggest that both men make it possible to live within the immanent frame with a modicum of transcendence.

Why Romney Not only = Risk But REALLY = Risk

When I first came up with the Romney=Risk idea
I was thinking of a strategy for Democratic victory
It was easy enough to play with
the ways in which the GOP and Romney
pose risks for the country
Now I have been overcome with a much deeper
sense of Romney=Risk
It is Romney himself
This is core analysis

There is only one
predictable way that Romney acts
He plays out whatever impulse strikes him
He is sufficiently at ease with his exalted status that
he believes he can wing anything that comes at him

Because he is afraid of being found out
he surrounds himself with lesser lights
who have been his devotees since he was Governor

He does not seek or take advice
He operates on cruise control
confident he can prevail
When he looks flummoxed it is because this
self-confidence has been pricked
It is never because he is wrong
or he has lied
It is that he has somehow failed to
pull it off

This is the preppie-Harvard acing mentality
at work
Everything has an element of bullshit
The trick is to be articulate enough
to suggest to the grader that you know what you are talking about
This finds its way to Wall Street
To Bain
To Metro North
And that is why it is not just the GOP and Romney
that poses untold risks for our future
but why Romney himself
is asking us to rely on his
spontaneous wit
to guide the nation
Run
Hide
Elect the President to a second term

Mildred Purse's Quadruple Political Play

Mildred Purse the doyenne of Beacon Hill
is on a political conjecture tear.
Here it is verbatim.

Joe Biden will retire as Vice President and receive the next Supreme Court appointment, flummoxing the GOP and ensuring the President's reelection. Hillary Clinton will be the President's running mate, flummoxing the GOP and ensuring the President's reelection. Susan Rice will become Secretary of State. Samantha Power will become Ambassador to the United Nations. I shall not speculate on the delicious pleasure that this scenario would give to connoisseurs of the political game.
