Birth of a gentle robber baron (Memoir Fiction)

The Complete History of Adam Panflick:

"The youngest, Stanley Panflick, was a compact, orderly boy who grew into a compact, orderly young man. Stanley regarded his father as an abject failure and Chipping Norton as a a prison for one of soaring ambition. Accordingly, he embarked on the Oceanic’s maiden voyage in Liverpool in 1871. After a false start, the vessel steamed and sailed across the Atlantic. In Boston, Stanley went west by train and got off in Cleveland. There he negotiated a loan on the strength of his confident presence. Though threadbare, the fellow possessed authority, mainly conveyed by commanding speech. In the press, Stanley’s talk came to be described as Shakespearean."
