The Liabilities of the Automobile Culture

The Liabilities of the Automobile Culture - Yahoo! Voices - voices.yahoo.com:

Say no to the automobile culture
Which leads to death and maiming everywhere
Car bound as by a predatory vulture
We see the death stains everywhere

+

Deduction - We accept the car and oil culture

Induction - The liabilities are staggering.

Abduction - To allow one chink in the current armor of the car-oil-economy might threaten its collapse.

+

First - Car free is catching on in cyberspace.

Second - The brute reality of car culture is daunting.

Third - Create as St. Francis did islands of liberation within hearing distance of the beast.

A Tiny Glimmer of Hope on the Future Front

A Texas Developer Attempts to Upend the American Subdivision - NYTimes.com:

"Yes, the houses are small by American standards (they range from 1,030 to 1,816 square feet), and the architectural style is decidedly rectilinear. But the boxiness is mediated by the skyward tilt of butterfly roofs, angled to hold photovoltaic arrays and channel rainwater into barrels.

SOL, an acronym for Solutions Oriented Living, is an ambitious attempt to upend the conventions of the American subdivision. It was developed by a partnership between Chris Krager, a 43-year-old architect who heads a firm called KRDB, and Russell M. Becker, 47, a civil engineer and general manager and owner of Beck-Reit & Sons Ltd., a construction company."

Read this and hope. This is the most significant story I have read in ages. The world will turn toward efforts like these. They will grow from the ground up. They will trump the world as it is. In my cyber-community structures like these are interconnected with a matrix facilitating ecological things. But the minimalism of the dwellings is spot on.

Protest Makes Penitent - Cure Foundation Reversal (Whoops Not So Fast)

Komen Foundation, Cancer Group, Backs Down on Cutting Off Planned Parenthood - NYTimes.com:

"The Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation reversed its decision to cut funds for breast cancer screenings at Planned Parenthood affiliates and apologized, saying the move had cast doubt on its “commitment to our mission of saving women’s lives.”

The announcement came after an avalanche of criticism online from people voicing their dismay on Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr about the move. The decision led to hundreds of thousands of dollars in donations to Planned Parenthood this week, including a $250,000 donation that Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg announced on Thursday."

Another incredible victory for the opportunity afforded by cyberspace to create new forms of democracy. This would have been unthinkable just a few years ago.

UPDATE: A Report that the reversal is non-existent. We shall see.

Carrying 71 tons of platinum when it was torpedoed.

Crew targets $3B bounty from WWII shipwreck - CBS News:

"Salvage operations should begin this month or in early March aboard a 220-foot vessel called Sea Hunter with the assistance of a remotely operated underwater vessel, he said.

"I'm going to get it, one way or another, even if I have to lift the ship out of the water," Brooks said.

Brooks said the Port Nicholson was going from Nova Scotia to New York and carrying 71 tons of platinum when it was torpedoed. The platinum was intended as payment from the Soviet Union to the United States, he said.

A federal court judge has granted him the salvage rights, he said.

"Maybe I'll buy a small island in the Caribbean," Brooks told the Boston Globe."

Whose platinum was it to begin with?

Three reasons Obama wins despite employment numbers

Obama's Magic Number? 150,000 Jobs Per Month - NYTimes.com:

The notion that there is a magic number for Obama is silly. Obama will win for the following three reasons:

The growing body of proof that the GOP does not care about the rights of women

The growing concern that poverty is a function of the avariciousness and disdain of the corporate-ruling class

The national choice to go with a strong and reasonable President who does not promise the moon instead of a President who could easily turn into Bush 3.

Even if Nate's magic number of 150K new jobs a month is not met the President will win. The chances are that he will take Nate seriously and see that that target is met. Making winning a lock.

Phil Hughes - Career on The Balance

Yankees Inbox: Bullpen role not ideal for Phil Hughes? | yankees.com: News: "The good news is that the Yankees don't need him to be a No. 3 starter this year. Right now, he's only being asked to pitch as a No. 5 starter. Hughes does acknowledge that this could be his make-or-break year, telling the New York Daily News in November, "I'm at a point where the patience is running out." He'll be 26 in June, and New York isn't in a position to hand him anything -- not with A.J. Burnett and Freddy Garcia also competing for the fifth-starter's job."

Is this an embarrassment of riches or past history coming to a head?

To yield good fruit, one must be a good tree.

To yield good fruit, one must be a good tree.
Abba grows good trees if you but believe;
But say you wish to see Abba’s will done,
Both earth and heaven. Then the good tree comes.
It is inexorable, destined, done.
