Catching up on Pattern Language
This brief history of pattern language is a salient description of what Christopher Alexander intended in A Pattern Language.
The concepts of Alexander have been applied to almost everything but his own magnificent goal of renewing human habitation of the world.
When Alexander's ideas are fused with a cyber-community approach, a way is opened for a grass roots effort to morph what we have into car free communities capable of spawning local economies.

Looking Back After The World Ignored The Truth Updated 12/6/2012
Say it's 2050 and though the roads are not as full as now, people make do with cars if they can afford it. Most others stay where they are because there is no way to cheaply go anywhere at all.
Construction has not changed but more and more of sprawl has been abandoned and more large vacated highway spaces have been chopped up into efficiency apartments.
The schools are now moving toward thirtieth worst in the world and higher education is for the wealthy only with a receding number of scholarships based on merit.
I could go on but let me simply state my theory for the umpteenth time:
We need a totally new theory of settlements based somewhat on Alexander's "Pattern Language" modified to insist that human settlements be car free, that we live in numbers of about 5-10K in a square mile, that all elements of a city be within a single community, and so forth.
We need to generate huge new industries based on creating the modular components of the new construction. We need eco matrix production so that each community can be sustainable in itself, recycling everything, generating its own energy, etc. We need to create local governance that is made up of residents who live and work in these cyber-communities.
I am not saying we cannot adapt what we have now. But we need a model to be built and no one has even drawn it yet.
If this became our plan we would have a vibrant economy and smart solutions and a good future. If we ignore the reality we mark time until we cannot even dream of it.
We will not get the change we need until we are willing to articulate what it is.

The smart wall says it all Smart surfaces (floors, walls, ceilings)
The smart wall says it all. I sit here day by day presaging the future. It is so different that I doubt anyone believes it.
Take the smart wall. Let's say it is made in Detroit and that one such surface costs as much as a home entertainment monolith. You need four of them to make up a space. You know about wallpaper right. It is now understood to be what you put on your monitor screen. On the smart wall, you can change your wallpaper whenever you like. When it is dreary outside you can make your smart wall cheery.
The smart wall may have little connectors for the addition of smart furniture. Also mass produced, maybe for a new cyber community in a non-cyclone area. All you need for furniture are surfaces and smart cushions. And smart walls.
Smart walls do not exist in isolation from the smart matrix and the smart floor and the smart ceiling. None of these things exist now because the money is all in Stephenson Nano Land Silicon Role Model Territory. At some point Dreiser and Veblen will reincarnate and we will begin to recover the balance between micro and macro. Micro is soft and we need something more substantial.
All of this rises from a dim but accurate perception. The current world is unsustainable. People are making bold efforts to deny this. The new unbuilt Christie Deep Sixed Hudson River Tunnel is an allegory of our time. There will be no more big digs.
Smart walls says it all. I shall be here knitting away as we continue to avoid the writing on the ...

Iranian oil squeeze is just a harbinger of the future
Iran Issues Threat to Oil Buyers in Europe - NYTimes.com: "Besieged by international sanctions over the Iranian nuclear program including a planned oil embargo by Europe, Iran warned its six largest European buyers on Wednesday that it might strike first by immediately cutting them off from Iranian oil."

As oil becomes more scarce and yes it will
And prices hit the roof and yes they will
We will still cling to cars oh yes we will
Not heeding what will be true still
That we could have a world beyond the car
Beyond the need for oil to travel far
Today's world is the world that Cheney wants

The Occupy agenda is right here
ShortFormContent at Blogger: At times, horizontalism can feel like utopian theatre.
You see I have merely suggested the parameters. All depends on people deciding what they want. But it does involve the most tactile reality. What we called houses. What we called transportation. What we called plumbing. What we called education. Occupy knows with me that we need to build an entirely new world. That we will build such. All I am doing is stating the obvious. That it be car free where we are living. That it be open to anyone and affordable to all. That it be chosen. That it be universal. Of course the fact that this solves global warming is incidental. I have reached my shortform limit.

Is there any better argument for my cyber communities
America's new poor - CBS News: "But for more families here, prosperity is a pretense. The job's lost, the savings are gone, and the big house is either in foreclosure or on its way. And just keeping food on the table is a struggle.
So Forsyth's newly-needy file into local food banks."
We are getting nowhere believing we can simply recover our sprawl nightmare. Where in gods name are the planners, the policy makers, the visionaries? It is all right here in this blog complex. We can no longer have a car, sprawl, oil culture. Period.

Our society is a planning disaster.
Our society is a planning disaster. It leeches life from human beings. For this reason, McMansions and their smaller brothers and sisters are a doomed race of dwellings. They genuinely suck, just as the values of the culture that spawned them suck.
Luxury cars that are sold on the noxious premise that they are the last bastion of individualism are likewise doomed in terms of being market-makers

We need to identify and celebrate entrepreneurs who understand that our drug-saturated, superstition-drenched culture serves nothing that is human or fine or admirable. We need hard education, smart health and inventive notions of what makes for community.

A viable local economy
A viable commerce cannot be built by a warehouse highway culture that assumes everyone will want to invest everything in home and automobiles.
Houses and cars cannot drive our economy.
The reason houses will continue to lose value is the same reason expensive cars will fade away in our society. Both houses and cars are part of a market that is itself fading. It is the market of a misguided affluent society that thought life could be aced by financial games, corporate posturing and the creation of a deceptive financial enterprise that came back and bit them.
Houses and cars, the way we have them now, will not wash. They cannot drive our economy.

A thicker, tougher, more subtle and more complex view of structure
Christopher Alexander Needs to Be Heard in the 21st Century - Associated Content from Yahoo! - associatedcontent.com: ""It must be emphasized, lest the orderly mind shrink in horror from anything that is not clearly articulated and categorized in tree form, that the idea of overlap, ambiguity, multiplicity of aspect and the semilattice are not less orderly than the rigid tree, but more so. They represent a thicker, tougher, more subtle and more complex view of structure.""

The missing ingredient is brains
A sustainable development plan for Corpus Christi » Corpus Christi Caller-Times: "CORPUS CHRISTI — A transformational redevelopment of Sunrise Mall, one of the topics at Tuesday's City Council meeting, would be SO cool. Who wouldn't want a thriving, pedestrian-friendly commercial-residential mix instead of a long-struggling early 1980s-style shopping center? The council didn't discuss who would do the redeveloping. Profitability, a proven developer attractant, may be a missing ingredient."
The premise is great. At least it's a start. But the missing ingredient is the holistic thinking part. How do you actually make a community' that will abolish today's car-dominated stratification. I would argue you do it by completely redoing construction as outlined in my developing blog Beyond Pattern Language.

Beyond Pattern Language: Cyber-cities evolve from ecumenopolis and pattern language
Pattern language is too diffuse a term these days to be of much use
It was originally way of looking at building things naturally with human beings in mind.
Today that the demands of commerce trump pattern language as originally promulgated
Now opposed to this person-ignoring commerce is the idea of the cyber-city
The cyber-city is a cluster of cyber-communities
A cyber-community is an intentional gathering pf persons who want
to have all elements of a city within walking distance
A cyber-community is up to 10,000 persons living and working and being educated and healed within a square mile on no more than four levels
A cyber-city is a cluster of some ten cyber-communities
Cyber-cities are the human units of the global ecumenpolis
Out of the original pattern language and ecumenopolis the cyber city evolves
Ecumenopolis was the term used by the late C. A. Doxiadis to denote the coming urbanized world
Today there is a confusion about what a city is
People still believe that cities should be ranked by their greatness
and that only such great cities can actually be real cities
The truth today is that any place can be a city
And should
