Binary is gold kept in its place

ShortFormContent at Blogger: 06/16/11: "From binary to triadic perception and creativity"

Binary is gold kept in its place
But when it is an end it loses face
It's time we all assumed triadic ways
The more we do the future we'll embrace

Peirce's Threes Described Simply - By Peirce

In 1904, CSP gave a "grammar free" definition of a relation in terms of firstness, secondness and thirdness. By "grammar free", I mean that it was not based on predicate logic and was closer to the existential diagrammatic logics he proposed. It is consistent with the iconicity of chemical notation.

"Firstness is the mode of being of that which is such as it is, positively and without reference to anything else.

Secondness is the mode of being of that which is such as it is, with respect to a second but regardless of any third.

Thirdness is the mode of being of that which is such as it is, in bringing a second and third in relation to each other."   - Letter to Lady Welby, 1904 Oct 12, (CP 8.328)

Certain values are ontological

Kuhn: Paradigms, Incommensurability, and "Progess" in Science and .... | Serendip's Exchange:

"There is, I think, no theory-independent way to reconstruct phrases like 'really there'; the notion of a match between the ontology of a theory an its real' counterpart in nature now seems to me illusive in principle ... I do not doubt, for example, that Newton's mechanics improves on Aristotle's and that Einstein's improves on Newton's as instruments for puzzle-solving. But I can see in their succession no coherent direction of ontological development ... if the position be relativism, I cannot see that the relativist loses anything needed to account for the nature and development of the sciences." (p 206-7)"

What is missing in ontology is values and what is missing in values is a theory that proposes just what might be ontological values. Conceding that all such theories would be fallible would be an apt Peircean given. Conceding that the presence of values such as democracy, tolerance, helpfulness and non-idolatry in the area reserved for the ontological would open up a realm that might best be said to have been opened by Peirce. Even such an elementary supposition would be a major stride in developing such a theory.. We might add in Nietzsche since he deserves credit for the notion of revaluing values even if he never succeeded in identifying or articulating what might be ontological values.

Charles Peirce on the fiendish Book of Revelation

Charles Peirce, "Evolutionary Love", at ARISBE: THE PEIRCE GATEWAY: "In the last book of the New Testament, its poor distracted author represents that all the time Christ was talking about having come to save the world, the secret design was to catch the entire human race, with the exception of a paltry 144,000, and souse them all in a brimstone lake, and as the smoke of their torment went up forever and ever, to turn and remark, "There is no curse any more." Would it be an insensible smirk or a fiendish grin that should accompany such an utterance? I wish I could believe St. John did not write it; but it is his gospel which tells about the "resurrection unto condemnation" -- that is of men's being resuscitated just for the sake of torturing them -- and at any rate, the Revelation is a very ancient composition."

Pristine gospel and post-Mark vengeance

Charles Peirce, "Evolutionary Love", at ARISBE: THE PEIRCE GATEWAY: " Undoubtedly the external circumstance, which more than all others at first inclined men to accept Christianity in its loveliness and tenderness, was the fearful extent to which society was broken up into units by the unmitigated greed and hard-heartedness into which the Romans had seduced the world. And yet it was that very same fact, more than any other external circumstance, that fostered that bitterness against the wicked world of which the primitive gospel of Mark contains not a single trace. At least, I do not detect it in the remark about the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost, where nothing is said about vengeance ... "

Abba's Way Counters The Gospel of Greed

Charles Peirce, "Evolutionary Love", at ARISBE: THE PEIRCE GATEWAY: " Here, then, is the issue. The gospel of Christ says that progress comes from every individual merging his individuality in sympathy with his neighbors. On the other side, the conviction of the nineteenth century is that progress takes place by virtue of every individual's striving for himself with all his might and trampling his neighbor under foot whenever he gets a chance to do so. This may accurately be called the Gospel of Greed."

Would the churches followed Abba's Way instead of proselytizing and moralizing in the name of creedal messianism.

Jesus, Darwin and Peirce

Charles Peirce, "Evolutionary Love", at ARISBE: THE PEIRCE GATEWAY: "As Darwin puts it on his title-page, it is the struggle for existence; and he should have added for his motto: Every individual for himself, and the Devil take the hindmost! Jesus, in his sermon on the Mount, expressed a different opinion."

Evolutionary love is a fundamental text in American intellectual life, generally ignored, as is its author Charles Sanders Peirce. That is changing slowly but surely. Peirce lay the foundation for the cyber age. It sometimes takes more than a century to bring a posthumous author front and center.

The icon in Peirce's sign theory

Project MUSE - Language - Is an icon iconic?: "In Peirce's sign theory an icon is a member of his most well-known trichotomy of icon/index/symbol, by which he meant to designate the mutable relations between a SIGN and its OBJECT. Peirce's earliest published mention of this trichotomy is from 1885 (EP 1:225).1 Here is how Peirce's most astute interpreter, T. L. Short, introduces his discussion of the trichotomy after citing several of Peirce's definitions: 'This division is based on the relation of a sign to its object—in later formulations, to its dynamic object . . . That relation is the one we have called the sign's "prior relation" to its object or the "ground" of its significance' (2007:214). "

Veblen had Marx tagged from the gitgo

"Except as a whole and except in the light of its postulates and aims, the Marxian system is not only not tenable, but it is not even intelligible. A discussion of a given isolated feature of the system (such as the theory of value) from the point of view of classical economics (such as that offered by Bohm-Bawerk) is as futile as a discussion of solids in terms of two dimensions."

The baby steps we need to evolve toward a future that is sustainable

There is a key work which does not, if I remember correctly, note Peirce. It is Robert Nisbet's Quest for Community which builds on Tonnies and others to advance the notion that sans community as face to face and self-giving we are more or less toast. This book was laid on me my Fred Schumann at Williams in the 50s. I mention this only to underline that the binary back and forth politics of the present is now beginning to morph into an understanding of a third which is neither conservative nor liberal, right nor left - and it is the power of community that is presently rightly vague, which embraces the excitation (widespread discontent), the blunt truth (a sclerotic and somewhat greed-inclined socio-political system) and relates these two things to the daily experimental efforts that are being made - the baby steps we need to evolve toward a future that is sustainable.

Peirce like Nietzsche is a posthumous author and I do not believe he will come to full flower save possibly in this century. When he does it will most certainly be because he influenced the thinking behind the global democratic revolution.

The Working of Peirce's Threes

Oddly enough it was Brent, whose biography of Peirce I am not in love with because it is, in a word, binary, who explained to my initial satisfaction the working of Threes which I must assume to be the basic structure of semiosis or semiotics at least for Peirce. To condense, the First as excitation the Second as Blunt Truth and the Third as experimental hypothesis or theory of how one might practically move forward beyond One and Two. I thought I have actually been operating and thinking this way in my own life and that I got into trouble mainly when I reverted to the binary. I thought that most of the back and forth in Congress resulted from being caught in the binary. I thought Obama is a Peircean either consciously or not.

Son of Croesus begs to join the slaying party

Herodotus meets Ellroy: Alyattes had a boy named Croesus. Attacks cities.:

"Son of Croesus begs to join the slaying party. By now you know exactly what will happen. Son begs to be included. But Croesus wants to protect him from predictable spear death. Son concerned about image. Testosterone problem. Too early to meet Falstaff. Or read the Bard. Or schmooze with Stoics. The boy is totally unprepared to survive. He knows no Peirce. He has a large virtual hole in head. He scratches himself all over. Is distracted in sex, New bride cries when he is not looking."

I am developing a simple theory. Where there is power there is crime. In democracies crime aligns with secret government and powerful private institutions (corporations). In authoritarian governments crime is continuous with the rulers (governments). rime is thus dealt with mainly in the level of values. Returning to such august documents as the Ten Commandments.

How Peirce and Wittgenstein May Be Said to Relate

ARISBE: Jaime Nubiola - Scholarship On The Relations Between Ludwig Wittgenstein And Charles S. Peirce: " In view of all this information, it seems that scholarly research into the relationship between Wittgenstein and Peirce can scarcely yield any new facts. There is, however, a growing interest in the unified or integrating study of the great currents of thought which have run through the philosophy of our century. In this framework pragmatist philosophy in the Peircean tradition and analytic philosophy, heir to the later Wittgenstein, can be understood as different aspects of an integrated stream of contemporary philosophical reflection. One of the factors which explain the success of analytic philosophy in the United States can be traced back to that pragmatic orientation of American academic philosophy, which takes its main source from Peirce."

Charles Sanders Peirce spanned many dicsciplines

Charles Sanders Peirce Online, Page 2 of 2 - Associated Content from Yahoo! - associatedcontent.com: "He is the only system-building philosopher in the Americas who has been both competent and productive in logic, in mathematics, and in a wide range of sciences. If he has had any equals in that respect in the entire history of philosophy, they do not number more than two. " From Max H. Fisch in Sebeok, The Play of Musement via Charles S. Peirce (1839-1914)."

Today there is almost an academic bias against the universal approach.

Visit The Peirce Edition Project

The Peirce Edition Project: "Charles Sanders Peirce (1839-1914), a uniquely American philosopher and scientist, is of seminal importance for modern thought. He was a tireless and brilliant thinker whose extensive writings have received international attention for over a century. Remarkably, however, much of what Peirce wrote remains in manuscript form, unpublished and in significant disarray. There has never been a comprehensive edition of Peirce's writings organized chronologically and edited according to current scholarly practices. The Peirce Edition Project was established in 1976 and has been part of IUPUI's School of Liberal Arts since 1983."

Rachel Maddow's Salient Truth Problem

Peircelets: We are, doubtless, in the main logical animals, but we are not perfectly so: "We are, doubtless, in the main logical animals, but we are not perfectly so"

Rachel Maddow is quite correct to note that the GOP proceeds on false reasoning. If the premise or premiss (Peirce) is not true - as many propositions GOP Presidential candidates agree upon - then any conclusions will be untrue, regardless of their political appeal. The media should be doing this homework. I notice that the NYT actually did have an inside story on GOP falsehood. Most probably, the GOP's addiction to untruth relates to the fact that President Obama has offered them a bill filled with things the GOP has advocated in the past. They should by all rights be supporting the President and the clear majority of voters throughout the land. A visit to Maplight.com to peruse their contributions will show why they do not.
