Google Should Think Triadically

Google invented a driver free car
But not a car free community
Google would do much better than that
By starting to think triadically

Instead of building a house in 20 hours move beyond houses

3D printer can build a house in 20 hours - YouTube http://buff.ly/SNIY4a
Why build a house in 20 hours
when you could build a whole community
by using the above technology
to build a cyber-matrix
that would hold as many spaces
as you wish
This matrix could be the skeleton
for mass produced surfaces
created remotely by factories that
now make cars

Thinking in terms of houses is the wrong approach
It sets the mind on what produces sprawl
It does not see the need to move beyond the car
It does not move far enough beyond green
It does not create sustainability

It is lovely that we can say we built that and mean
that NASA stumbled on enlarging CAD
Lovely to build a house in 20 hours
But it would be more lovely
to dream of an actual move forward that
would get the job done

This is like Google's driverless car
It is an oxymoron in the making

We will not get the change we need until we are willing to articulate what it is

Yes or no

We want smaller schools we can walk to
with teachers who are part of the community

We want the option of working from home
or at work spaces we can walk to

We want neighborhoods that are face to face
and safe from speeding traffic

We want a mix of things we associate with cities
scaled down to serve local communities

We want enough diversity near at hand so we
can create a vibrant local economy

We do not need to drive to shop if
shopping becomes selecting at cyber-kiosks
staffed by experts

We would prefer home delivery if we could select
from the world at a cyber-kiosk
we could walk to

We would prefer a car-free community that is
designed as a unified structure
that is eco-sufficient

I recognize that much of this is not even
within the purview of planners
but it should be

We live in square mile wastelands everywhere I go I see the open spaces moulder in the sun

+
We live in square mile wastelands
Everywhere I go
I see the open spaces
like ruins left to moulder 'neath the sun
And I see built around them
the relics of a past where
building was corrupted
retro
and where we treated people
like things
or consumers
fish mouths open
sucking in the detritus of
our dismal plastic sea
+
I see these square mile wastelands
turning into stadiums
not for teams of Yankees
but for all of us to live in
walk in
work in'
enjoy in
to get education in
to lie sick in bed in
a block or so from home
to go to school in
in 100 separate places
to spawn new economies
to be sheltered from the flood storms
impervious to wind storms
Where public is so nice
that folk just want to sit there
and write their thoughts on tables
eat there
drink there
+
I see a rising cluster
of such new communities
filling up these lost and desolate square miles
half medieval cities
half  pre-fab custom spaces
where walls are thin as paper
sound proof as castle walls
Where stairs give way
to rising ways
and trafficked streets give way
to walks
Where the commute
is over
because any work space anywhere
connects with spaces anywhere
+
Yes I see all these things like
others who see forward when they
pass these wasteland places
and reflect that they
are but the harbingers of something bold and new

Dear Jeff Bezos, here's your big idea. You can do this.

Jeff Bezos - Forbes http://buff.ly/Y2ja8R

+

Jeff you told Charlie Rose you wanted to do something
no one else has done
Alright
Do this

+

Hire a team to design a prototype of
what I have called a cyber-community
A diverse multi-purpose community
of around 10K persons
car-free
with urban amenities
where one lives and works and recreates.
The design should have the following components
The community should be compact
no more than a mile from side to side
It should have no stairs
and no more than four levels
It should be built to withstand flood
fire and extreme weather
It should generate and distribute
the bulk of its own energy
It should collect much of its energy
in the form of wind and sun
It  should be prefabricated
Its surfaces and walls
should be smart and dupllicable
and easily replaceable
A cyber community
of this sort would have
residences and work spaces
and all the public and commercial
elements we associate with urban life
scaled to the needs of the particular community
Stores would be cyber-kiosks
where one could access all products
on a large screen
and order them for delivery
Public facilities would be used in common
There would be a public square every 100 yards or so

+

Once you get the design and build a model
you will be able to market this as
the wave of an ecologically sane future
When you build your next data center
build one of these

+

There is much more on cyber-communities
on this little blog
Believe me Jeff
the person who makes
properly-scaled
integral sustainable living
normative
will have
opened the door to a viable future

New Ideas for Post-Sandy Construction - Revised 11/29/2012

+
Do not rebuild rethink
Imagine a flood and plan beyond its reach

+

Post-Sandy construction should be an opportunity to
create new concepts of building and community

Among the concepts to consider

+

Either raise structures or move them to higher ground

Create new mass-prodsuced pre-fabricated smart surfaces -
walls floors ceilings streets

Create matrix's (skeletal structures) to support walls and other surfaces
and to carry all elements in and out of  living and working spaces

Stop building individual houses and imagine something past repeated
apartments - create spaces for community life

Ultimately the space occupied by a stadiun could become a living
and working community for 5-10K people

If a community is dense enough it can be car-free
with most everything in walking distance

When ways are clear they can be used for
other than automobile transportation
moving surfaces rides etc

Rooms and other spaces like cars should
become standard models made remotely and delivered
in easily assembled parts

Create at least one public space for every four or so
living spaces

Create stair free communities of no more than four levels
and build to withstand extreme weather

More Stacked Images - How Shall We Build for The Future?

I see the future integral and car free
beyond the suicidal commitment to fixed fossil fuel disaster
I see an eminently logical conclusion
that restores diversity and face-to-face
and over-leaps the horrendous boundaries we have erected
by creating what is in effect a pariah class
of persons taken to be not who they are
but who we project them to be
The integral community of the future is car free
It has a dense population living in complete privacy
within community
It walks to work to play to sing to dance to be
It has intentional sitting areas
There are enough people within a mile
to enable an economy to grow and flourish
THE IMAGES
The Top First
The dank and darkish hole of a past
that has devolved into an oil soaked sprawl
Second  A Plethora of Options
challenging the existence of a dark dank future
Third  An initial Iteration of
a walkable cyber-community
where principles of pattern language
and invention of utterly new construction methods
begin to create safe and secure
living
How shall begin
We already have begun
We know image one
We sense image two
It remains to venture into iteration

What is truth Pilate asked which means he could not see

Seeing and hearing is the essence of the prophetic challenge
It is echoed in Scripture from first Isaiah to Paul
with a stop at Jesus on the way
Anyone with a mind now sees the unfolding drama of the end of oil
Chevron tries to ameliorate it with soft short term profit words
but when whatever end to oil comes
it will have been reasonable to stop using it long before we did
and to begin building the post-oil world
made manifest on the very pages of this blog
car free integral and a quarter revolution beyond binary silliness

Visualizing A Car Free Cyber Community One

Visualizing A Car Free Cyber Community Two | ShortFormContent at Blogger:

The squares are residential
The rectangles are commercial and institutional
The circles are squares for sitting and play
The ovals are kiosks and other small structures
representing specialties and local employment
Connections between structures are part of a common
matrix that serves the whole
A cyber community is made up of a maximum of four levels
The total area is a mile or so square

Postmodern Ideas and Their Limitations

Those Fabulous Confabs: "If TED’s platinum brand is at risk of becoming a generic, it has been with the full support of the brand’s owner. As the TED Talks online uncovered a far-flung global yen for idea videos, TED’s TEDX program, in which the company grants would-be curators licenses to organize local mini-TEDs, has been unexpectedly popular. Since it launched in March 2009, there have been more than 3,000. There has been a TEDX Hunstville (Alabama), a TEDX Timisoara (Romania), a TEDX Gujranwala (Pakistan). There is now one TEDX, and usually more, every day somewhere in the world."

More on the Matrix That Really Matters

ShortFormContent at Blogger: The Matrix That Really Matters Has Not Been Built Yet:

'via Blog this'

Infrastructure cannot be "repaired" if we have no idea of what we want
Suppose we want something beyond cars and commuting
Beyond detached houses built for size
Suppose we want walkable communities with enough population to enable viable local businesses
A way to work and be educated at or near home
Zoning that integrates everything in a sane and rational way

The miracle of cyberspace means we can choose where and how we live and move and have our being
Once the mind is liberated from resignation to our current sprawl culture
we can see a cyber-community as a giant step beyond what we now have

We could mass produce lego like components for the construction of modular units of space
These could supply the world
We could create a giant matrix that would serve 5-10K
Accommodating myriad forms built from these components
Enabling technological macro elements that no individual could afford
For recycling,
Energy generation
Enjoyable face to face living
A reformed education system
The integration of cyber-capacity with every element of socio-cultural existence

Cyber-communities would be safe from most weather emergencies
They would enable new economies
New jobs
New mobility

What nobody gets about the future

For what it's worth here is what I would say
No one is getting about the future
That the day of driving our lives away will end
That the day of building detached houses will end
That the race to save these things will impede the future
That the future will be either necessity or choice
We could freely decide to move to car free communities and a high tech alternative
To today's sclerotic and impossible transportation
Or we could be forced into ultimately conceding the conclusions above
Choice is vastly better than necessity
We could create multi-zoned car-free cyber-communities
With modular spaces build within an eco-sufficient matrix
With reformed education because the neighborhood becomes a school
By accepting their ultimate necessity
And modeling new forms of social being
Where we could walk to everything
Where the need for  necessary travel is trumped by technology
Where the need for urban in gratified in the micro environment
Where cyber means that we utilize cyber
As communal experience via kiosks staffed and placed
Throughout the cyber-community
And so forth and so on as noted here
And in the blog complex

Is there any better argument for my cyber communities

America's new poor - CBS News: "But for more families here, prosperity is a pretense. The job's lost, the savings are gone, and the big house is either in foreclosure or on its way. And just keeping food on the table is a struggle.

So Forsyth's newly-needy file into local food banks."

We are getting nowhere believing we can simply recover our sprawl nightmare. Where in gods name are the planners, the policy makers, the visionaries? It is all right here in this blog complex. We can no longer have a car, sprawl, oil culture. Period.

Today's Corporate Phone Set-Up Should Be Deep-Sixed

Current call modes are the direct result of out automobile sprawl society
In my car free cyber community you would have everything face to face
You would walk a mile or less to reach anything
You would find representatives in kiosks
They would complete transactions of all sorts
If you had to wait there would be tables and chairs

Planning for a nonexistent future

New Auto Technology Can Tell When You’re ‘Driving While Drowsy’ - TIME NewsFeed: "In the age of multilingual GPS devices, driver seat massages and cruise control navigation, it was only a matter of time before manufacturers developed drowsy driver alerts.

That's right – technology to tell you when you're in danger in nodding off behind the wheel, bringing you back to full attention through dashboard icons and warning alarms."

'via Blog this'

This assumes that a century from now there will be fuel to support an automobile world. I have my doubts. I believe the world of cars and sprawl is ending. The future will not be a slow evolution of the infrastructure we have now. It is more likely to be a response to cataclysmic environmental events. It is for this reason that I have proposed the cyber-community as a successor to sprawl-oil society.

Intelligent design of the future world has already been done

ShortFormContent at Blogger: An intelligent alternative to global energy death:

Intelligent design of the future world has already been done
Christopher Alexander and others have done so in Pattern Language
The defect of this work is its acceptance of the car
Intelligent design will make the car a costly option
Intelligent design will create car free cyber communities
The design of such communities has not even begun
Because people are unwilling to start from scratch
Intelligent design begins by outlining the
Basic components of the future cyber-community

Just to be clear

ShortFormContent at Blogger: Why Beyond Pattern Language: "Quality of Life: The quality of life in our drug and consumer society is egregious. Parts of our society are dysfunctional. My proposal is for voluntary residence in cyber-communities where people assent to the same degree of rules that might be proposed by a co-op or even a landlord. The structure of a cyber-community and the actual structure of dwellings discourages all sorts of criminality."

In any community of 10,000 we now have policing and other security operations. A cyber community would have similar security. The only difference would be a safer environment and a healthier social structure with such features as being able to walk to work and school, to sit in one of many squares and park settings easily reached by foot, and to enjoy face to face contact with some confidence that you are on friendly turf. Car free cyber-communities are the wave of the future.

Beyond Pattern Language: Cyber-cities evolve from ecumenopolis and pattern language

Pattern language is too diffuse a term these days to be of much use
It  was originally way of looking at building things naturally with human beings in mind.
Today that the demands of commerce trump pattern language as originally promulgated

Now opposed to this person-ignoring commerce is the idea of the cyber-city

The cyber-city is a cluster of cyber-communities
A cyber-community is an intentional gathering pf persons who want
to have all elements of a city within walking distance
A cyber-community is up to 10,000 persons living and working and being educated and healed within a square mile on no more than four levels

A cyber-city is a cluster of some ten cyber-communities

Cyber-cities are the human units of the global ecumenpolis

Out of the original pattern language and ecumenopolis the cyber city evolves

Ecumenopolis was the term used by the late C. A. Doxiadis to denote the coming urbanized world

Today there is a confusion about what a city is
People still believe that cities should be ranked by their greatness
and that only such great cities can actually be real cities

The truth today is that any place can be a city

And should
