Gingrich a loose cannon? In the party of McCain and Palin?

Sedate Stroll to South Carolina Polls Turns Into a Brawl - NYTimes.com:

Whatever the result in a few hours, it is curtains for Romney. I just sat through a CSPAN thing with Rahm and Rachel where (on Thursday) they were convinced that Romney would get the nomination. We are about to see another five or ten million of Romney money dumped into the effort to redeem Mitt. Hey he's helping the middle class, right? I'll be here later with the results.

Dozens Killed by Radical Islamic Sect in Nigeria - NYTimes.com

Dozens Killed by Radical Islamic Sect in Nigeria - NYTimes.com: "Boko Haram, whose name means “Western education is forbidden” in the local Hausa language, has focused its attacks mainly on government and police sites in the north, and has also threatened to kill any Christians living there. The group carried out a series of attacks on churches last Christmas. Last summer, the sect appeared to broaden its focus when it attacked the national police headquarters in the capital, Abuja, and the United Nations building there, killing at least 23 people."

Alright I believe religion is fading away and spirituality which is not in conflict with science is taking its place. But stuff like the above requires a response. My response is that this is the corruption which religion has typically buttressed by its acceptance of non-experiential conjecture in place of experimental reality. Pinker says violence in the world is on the decline and this would be in accord with my thesis. Stories like this should be taken with great seriousness and the false premises buttressing fanatic violence should be roundly opposed. The Abrahamic religions are at the heart of the problem insofar as they buttress violence whether in America or Nigeria.

We are totally behind the 8 ball educationally

Apple, America and a Squeezed Middle Class - NYTimes.com: "The president’s question touched upon a central conviction at Apple. It isn’t just that workers are cheaper abroad. Rather, Apple’s executives believe the vast scale of overseas factories as well as the flexibility, diligence and industrial skills of foreign workers have so outpaced their American counterparts that “Made in the U.S.A.” is no longer a viable option for most Apple products."

The most revealing thing I've seen on why we would do well to cut the military by half and up education by half. We really are tottering at the edge of a jobs abyss.

A short treatise on the color pink

I Blame The Patriarchy: "What a relief, all that pink, because the Global Accords Governing Fair Use of Women clearly state that if the fairer sex go longer than 16 minutes without girlification, ghettoization, infantilization, and condescension, they’re liable to start acting like unfuckable men. From there, as you can well imagine, it’s but a short, slippery hop to the cosmos-rocking vortex of horror that would be the dissolution of the gender binary, followed closely by the total destruction of oppression culture as we know it."

With this post I reassert my fanhood of this site and its manifestation of the power of words to at least nudge the world toward an appreciation of how things actually are.

You don't think this is final, do you?

Romney Will Participate in Monday Debate - NYTimes.com: "GREENVILLE, S.C. — After a high-stakes game of chicken between Mitt Romney and NBC News over whether he would participate in the next debate, Mr. Romney blinked."

'via Blog this'

I have to smile. Who's to say he won't change his mind. I can imagine lots of scenarios. He fires his consultants and wings it from now on. He hires Bob Schrum. But no. Newt would cream him in absentia. Oh and yes the MSM narrative will cast about for Bush 3 or Daniels. But as I suggested earlier, I think Newt will stave off that effort.

Indecision in South Carolina

With Hours to Decide, Few in S. Carolina Are Willing to Commit - NYTimes.com: "No one had found a candidate they liked enough to argue for.

From country restaurants like this one to suburban shopping malls in Spartanburg and espresso bars in Greenville, voters facing four options in the Republican primary seemed to shrug and say, “I haven’t decided.”"

Maybe they will get around to understanding that the best Republican President they could have is the incumbent.

Freud Was Glass Half Empty, Peirce Was Not

Freud: the last great Enlightenment thinker | Prospect Magazine: "Writing to Albert Einstein in the early 1930s, Sigmund Freud suggested that “man has in him an active instinct for hatred and destruction.” Freud went on to contrast this “instinct to destroy and kill” with one he called erotic—an instinct “to conserve and unify,” an instinct for love.

Without speculating too much, Freud continued, one might suppose that these instincts function in every living being, with what he called “the death instinct”—thanatos—acting “to work its ruin and reduce life to its primal state of inert matter.” The death instinct provided “the biological justification for all those vile, pernicious propensities [to war] which we are now combating.”"

Peirce was a few generations ahead of Freud and only now is poised to vault well ahead of the good Doctor in the influence department.

If Santorum Endorses Gingrich He Gets to Be Veep

Election Forecasts - FiveThirtyEight Blog - NYTimes.com:

'via Blog this'

Maybe I'm on a prescience roll. This seems at least plausible. I called Obama before others did. And Gingrich. Who knows? Gingrich-Santorum or even Gingrich-Romney would be a fairly strong ticket.

FiveThirtyEight - Nate Silver\'s Political Calculus

Explaining The Supreme Court Texas Ruling

Redistricting in Texas - NYTimes.com: "At the oral argument, one justice wanted to ignore Section 5, others wanted to limit its impact on the Section 2 lawsuit, others still insisted that Section 5 could not be ignored. The justices chastised the San Antonio court for not showing enough deference to the Texas plan, but there is clear evidence that it embodies what the Justice Department in the Section 5 lawsuit calls “intentional discrimination” — and should not be allowed to prevail."

This editorial explains things a bit. In essence the Court appears to be siding with the very worst aspects of political gerrymandering. Translate that and you get Hispanics denied fair representation. And a handshake between Scalia and Thomas. Sorry to be so blunt.

Newt - but isn't it odd that he achieved bipartisan advances?

Newt’s Southern Strategy - NYTimes.com: "Romney dares not go there. Not Newt. He’s the street fighter with a history of poisonous politics who not only goes there but dwells there. He makes his nest among the thorns of open animus and coded language."

'via Blog this'

The conventional Newt is Nixon to the Tenth Power (race-wise) meme is only half the story. Newt could also be seen as a sort of enema of the GOP since he actually did manage to bring the party to the table in the 1990s. Where Blow and others are amusing is in their assumption that Gingrich is damaging his chances against President Obama. If Newt can outsmart the GOP he can win the Presidency. The only way the President can win is to win the debate. We the people are setting up an epic confrontation and when it is over the nation will be the better for it.

We should think before we protest too much.

Gingrich, Romney - Partnershp marriages are a sociological reality

For Gingrich, Wives Always at Center of Career - NYTimes.com: "WASHINGTON — When Newt Gingrich was House speaker, lawmakers would routinely arrive at his elegant suite in the Capitol and find an unexpected adviser sitting on the couch: his wife, Marianne."

'via Blog this'

Many marriages are based precisely on the need for a partner and this works both ways. Many marraiges that have love at their center are not partnership marriages even though interests may be shared. A partnership marriage involves subordination and sacrifice. It is ended when the reason for the partnership is no longer present, usually because one or the other changes.
